Customized Group Training for Boards
Interactive virtual or in-person learning for your whole board, customized to address where your board is at today.
Led by Brian Saber, President of Asking Matters.
Also includes lifetime Asking Matters membership for your whole board so they can continue learning!
The Challenge
Chances are most of your board members don’t know how to fundraise. Period.
They think – or are wrongly taught – that they’re supposed to “hit up” everyone they know. And that they’ll have to reciprocate.
They think they have to say something very specific – that there’s some secret sauce and they don’t know enough about the organization to be articulate.
They fear it so much they say “I’ll do anything but fundraise!”
The Solution
My job is to dispel all that. To break down the barriers, put fundraising in its proper context, and teach everything about what I call “relational fundraising” – fundraising based on treating board members as mini major gift officers whose job is to build a handful of relationships over the long run.
Every one of my trainings is customized to your needs. We’ll have a number of conversations so I understand where you’re at. I’ll read all your materials. And then I’ll build something that speaks to your board.
Each training comes with the following:
- A worksheet of 15-20 questions
- A copy of one of my books for all board members
- Lifetime memberships at Asking Matters for all board members and three staff
- A Customized landing page, where a PDF of the slides and other materials will reside
Virtual or In-Person
I work in both formats. If virtual, two (120-150 minute) or three (60-90 minute) sessions works best, though I can provide training in one day with a good-sized break in the middle. In-person trainings are usually 5 hours in one session, including 40 minutes of breaks.

We hosted Brian for our November Women in Development program, “What is Your Asking Style?” After the presentation, a professional in the industry for over 20 years came up to me and said this was the best program they have been to and they were enlightened with [Brian’s] wealth of information.
Erica Warner, Program Co-Chair, Women in Develop of Northeast New York
Thank you for a fantastic webinar today on "Amazingly Successful Face-to-Face Solicitations." It was one of the best, if not the best, webinar I've attended. You were able to take a sometimes overwhelming topic and reduce it to concise fundamentals we can put into practice.

A Bit About Me!
I’ve spent more than 35 years working in the nonprofit world – ever since college – and have personally solicited thousands of donors as a director of development, executive director, consultant and volunteer. I certainly never set out to be a fundraiser and never saw myself as one. But I saw how much of an impact I could make – and my organizations could make – if I went out and asked.
I founded Asking Matters in 2010 to help our field fundraise more comfortably and effectively, and now spend much of my time as a trainer, coach and consultant around the country and abroad. I lead workshops, create training courses, present webinars, and coach top-level staff, taking organizations to the next level.
