• Most board members don’t know how to fundraise and fear it.
• Staff don’t have the expertise to train their boards. Staff themselves are often untrained, and even if they’ve been trained doesn’t mean they have the skills to be trainers themselves.
• Staff need help communicating the right messages, leading exercises, and making a compelling argument overall.
• An outside voice is very helpful to keep from putting staff in the awkward position of always having to convince board members to do this challenging work. Imagine always having to tell your bosses what to do and now imagine having to tell them to do the work they most want to avoid.
• People learn in different ways. It’s hard enough to provide a one-off group training, but even harder to provide ongoing reading, opportunities to learn, and regular motivation.
